My Experience
In a coastal test, 304 bars showed pitting after 18 months. 316 bars showed no pitting after 5 years.
Is 316 or 316L more corrosion resistant?
316 and 316L have essentially the same corrosion resistance1. The "L" stands for low carbon (0.03% max), not for improved corrosion resistance1.
316L has lower carbon than 316 (0.03% vs 0.08% max). This improves weldability2 and prevents sensitization (carbide precipitation) during welding. For corrosion resistance1 in the base metal, they are identical. For welded components, 316L is preferred because the weld area maintains corrosion resistance1.
